Neck Designs & Woods

We offer our necks with a choice of either flat or angled headstock. Flat headstocks may or may not require the addition of string trees/retainers, depending on the headstock layout and chosen tuners.

Note that since all of our necks are carved to final shape by hand, all measurements given here are approximate.

Neck Taper

Our standard nut widths are given below. We can make necks with alternate tapers, but this will incur additional design charges.

Neck Joint

Finishing

Any finish may be used for our necks, but if not specified otherwise, we will default to satin clear for the neck finish. Headstocks can similarly take any finish, with the most common selections being to match the body, be opaque black, or be left natural (clear).

Binding

We stock single-color binding in black, white, and cream, should you prefer a bound neck. We can also source multi-ply binding, as well as patterns such as faux tortoise. We do not offer natural wood binding.

For angled-headstock necks, we can bind both the fretboard and headstock, or just the fretboard alone. For flat-headstock necks, only the fretboard can be bound.

Reinforcement

All of our bass necks come standard with carbon reinforcement rods, as do all guitar necks with a scale length of 27″ or greater. Guitar necks with shorter scales may elect to include reinforcement for a small fee.

Alternative reinforcement rods, such as titanium, are available at additional cost.

Truss Rods

All of our necks use modern-style dual-action truss rods. Standard truss rods adjust using a 4mm hex wrench, with the access located at the headstock for guitars and at the heel for basses. Access routes are normally left open and either left natural or painted black, depending on the surrounding finish. Covers for the access routes are an option for a small fee.

Heel-mounted spoke-wheel truss rods are also available for both guitar and bass at an additional cost.
